Placing Holds
Two types of holds can be placed for patrons.



The title-level hold places a hold on the first available copy of a title. These types of holds are also known as 'Copy Returned Soonest' holds. A title-level hold attaches to the bibliographic record for the desired title. For this reason, title-level holds are sometimes also referred to as bibliographic-level holds. A title-level hold is satisfied when an item associated with the specified bibliographic record is returned to the library system.



With an item-level hold, the hold is attached to an individual item record (for example, a specific copy of a book or a specific volume of a set). An item-level hold is satisfied when that specific item is returned to the library system.

Either type of hold can be placed in several situations. For example:
  • All available copies from all branches are checked out.


  • All copies from the patron's branch are checked out, but there are available copies at other branches. The system can generate a Paging Slip to notify the owning branch to send the item to the hold pickup location.


  • The patron's branch does not own a copy, but there are available copies at another branch. This will also generate a Paging Slip.


  • Additionally, item-level holds can be used for a situation where an item's status is On Shelf, but the item cannot be located.


When the hold is placed, you have the option of changing the status of the item to Missing.
